The Pearson Affordable Learning Fund, launched July 2012, invests in companies that build solutions for affordable and high quality education services across Africa, Asia and Latin America. For instance, Pearson has made investments in some school groups that supply low cost schools for students in countries including Ghana, South Africa, Kenya and the Philippines. This will enable children to access education where it is not provided by local governments.

The Plantwise Knowledge Bank (PWKB) is our gateway to practical online and offline plant health plant health information, including diagnostic resources, best-practice pest management advice and plant clinic data analysis for targeted crop protection. To provide data management support to our partners, we developed the Plantwise Online Management System (POMS) to store and manage information on Plantwise activities in their countries.

HarperCollins supports Housing Works, a New York-based nonprofit dedicated to fighting AIDS and homelessness for the past 10 years. During this period, the company has donated more than 230,000 books to the Housing Works Bookstore Cafe, with donations of nearly 30,000 books this fiscal year. One hundred percent of the store’s profits go toward funding the organization’s lifesaving services.

In the agriculture sector, gender affects women and men’s roles, access to and ownership of resources and ability to make decisions. Integrating a gender perspective in agriculture is important to realize gender equality and women’s empowerment, enabling women to participate and benefit from development. It is also important to improve effectiveness of agriculture programs and policies, to improve food security, reduce poverty and increase resilience to climate and other risks.

Although gender is one of the most important social and analytical categories used in public health research, there remains a gap in integrating gender related concepts in human health, animal health, the health of the environment and in the interdisciplinary One Health debate. One Health should be driven by inclusiveness and equity on all levels of society. In consequence, the One Health methodological definition should include feminist theories and gender concepts.
