UQP actively acquires and publishes titles that explore current social and environmental issues to help educate readers and spark important conversations, including Royce Kurmelovs’s SLICK, which provides an on-the-ground examination of how the fossil fuel industry captured Australia, and outlines what’s at stake for the survival of the planet, and King and Sparrow’s OUT OF THE BOX, which brings together expert advice, interviews and up-to-date resources to help ND children thrive.

Launching in 2023, UQP’s First Nations Classics series is the first of its kind in Australia and heroes the country’s richest Indigenous stories and voices. UQP recognises the importance of sustaining and uplifting these classic texts, some of which have not been in circulation for many years. The editions feature new introductions by some of today’s most prominent First Nations writers. The series currently comprises of 16 titles with more new editions in the works for 2025.

Through Wiley’s partnership with Trees for the Future, a tree gets planted for every copy of a journal we actively stop printing. We surpassed our goal of one million trees planted by May 2024. In calendar year 2023 alone, we funded 470,492 trees planted, 376 forest gardens, 376 farmers being trained, and 3,011 family beneficiaries.

Recycle EVERYTHING Month proved to be a triumph!
The Wiley Australia Community & Social Responsibility Committee rallied our Brisbane, Melbourne, and remote teams for a month-long endeavor dedicated to recycling and donating goods.
The result? Over 275lbs of items were collected across all our offices.

In November 2024, multiple prominent scholarly publishers joined together in a call to action for the global community and governments to take immediate, decisive steps toward avoiding climate catastrophe. This joint editorial, published across multiple leading journals, identifies microbe-based solutions to pursue and globally coordinated strategies for implementing them at scale, emphasizing that science must be at the forefront of the global response to the climate crisis.

Emerald Publishing has partnered with Chapter One in the UK, a charity that connects schools with companies who sponsor their employees as online reading volunteers. According to a recent report conducted by Pro Bono Economics, more than a quarter of five-year-olds in England don’t meet expected levels of literacy. We want to help change this by supporting children to experience the joy of reading and help improve opportunities for them later in life.

Emerald Publishing’s green open access route offers all Emerald’s journal authors or book chapter authors the option to make their research immediately and openly available upon official publication, free from payment.

First introduced in 2014, we are one of only a handful of publishers that doesn’t impose an embargo period.

HarperCollins and Amistad donate to the Hurston/Wright Foundation, which provides services, supports and opportunities that mentor, recognize and provide community for professional and aspiring Black writers.

HarperCollins UK plants a tree for every new starter, working with Trees for Life, a rewilding charity based in Scotland, committed to creating large-scale environmental change in the Scottish Highlands. They plant a tree alongside other native trees that will in time transform open Scottish hillsides into healthy young woodland helping to restore the Caledonian forest.

The new HarperCollins facility in Robroyston, Glasgow, including distribution center and offices, is due to open in 2025 and is being built with sustainability in mind. The site is being built to BREEAM ‘very good’ standard – this means it will be operating to a high standard on areas including energy and water usage, pollution, waste and ecology. Features will include solar panels, rain water recycled for bathrooms, and landscaping that will promote the local ecosystem.

HarperCollins has long supported Girls Write Now, an organization dedicated to empowering underserved youth through writing and mentorship. HarperOne collaborated with the group to publish a hands-on guide to storytelling—conceived, written, and edited by the young people of Girls Write Now.

For the fourteenth year in a row, HarperCollins partnered with Volunteers of America for Operation Backpack. HarperCollins donated dictionaries and children’s books; employees volunteered to fill backpacks with books and school supplies. The bags were distributed to school-age children living in New York City homeless or domestic violence shelters.

HarperCollins believes in fostering a marketplace where consumers choose what to read. In response to rising censorship and book banning, we joined challenges to unconstitutional legislation that restricts access to books, including a lawsuit against Iowa’s book-banning provisions of SF 496. Additionally, HarperCollins donated to Unite Against Book Bans, the National Coalition Against Censorship, PEN America, and Little Free Library, and published resources on its website.

Employees volunteered with Chapter One, an online volunteer tutoring program that helps first and second grade students from underprivileged communities learn to read.

Employees fundraised money to support City Harvest, a nonprofit committed to helping New Yorkers in need by rescuing good food that would otherwise go to waste and delivering it to soup kitchens, food pantries, and other community food programs across the city.
