The new HarperCollins facility in Robroyston, Glasgow, including distribution center and offices, is due to open in 2025 and is being built with sustainability in mind. The site is being built to BREEAM ‘very good’ standard – this means it will be operating to a high standard on areas including energy and water usage, pollution, waste and ecology. Features will include solar panels, rain water recycled for bathrooms, and landscaping that will promote the local ecosystem.

Collins, Farshore, and HarperCollins Children’s Books are excited to be working with Wastebuster on the not-for-profit recycling program, Recycle to Read. We will be supplying books as rewards to participating schools who organize and promote toy, textiles and battery takeback collections in exchange for vouchers to spend on books.

HarperCollins saved the equivalent of 3.2 million gallons of water and 2.8 million kg of CO2 emissions in fiscal 2023 through its use of Rolland Envirobook paper (the only book publishing paper made in North America consisting of 100% post-consumer waste recycled fiber), and Rolland Opaque paper, which consists of 30% recycled fiber.

HarperCollins UK became a member of On Pack Recycling Labels (OPRL), a program to promote consumer awareness of what materials can be recycled and where they can recycle them. OPRL labels are widely recognized in the U.K. and give clear information to consumers on items with shrink-wrap or cardboard packaging used to protect products.

Our eco-friendly font journey began in 2017 with Zondervan’s NIV Comfort Print typeface, which has saved over 100M pages, followed by the HC Arc font for non-English titles. The proprietary fonts are easy to implement and versatile, enhancing reader experience while benefiting the environment. The adult trade team has since curated a collection of thinner fonts that improve opacity and use less ink; paired with thoughtful layouts to maximize space and reduce page count has saved over 183M pages.

In Sydney, HarperCollins Australia adopted sustainable design principles in their office relocation, using high-recycled-content materials from local suppliers, installing sensor lighting, and donating two tons of surplus office supplies.

RAISE AWARENESS OF ECOLOGICAL TRANSITION CHALLENGES AMOUNG BOOK SECTOR PROFESSIONNALS

Modelled on the Climate Fresk – an educational card game with over a million followers – the Book Fresk is designed to raise awareness of sustainable development issues among book professionals.

Created in 2023 by Fontaine O Livres and CSR Specialist Charles Hédouin, the Book Fresk is played in a 3-hours game, including brainstorming, discussion and outlook.

The Green Communication and Publishing Manifesto, launched by Green Transformation and Sustainability Network, urges publishers, other sectors and individuals to align their publishing and communication activities with the SDGs, particularly in climate action, biodiversity, and clean energy. It seeks to inspire the Vietnamese and global publishing sector to drive meaningful environmental action, promote truth, and collaborate for a sustainable future. The Manifesto will be updated as necessary.

Our Annual Meeting format plan—alternating annually between virtual and in-person meetings—represents positive climate action and equitable learning opportunities for member press staff. Our virtual meetings lessen the impact of global travel and lower cost barriers to participation. At in-person conferences, we decrease materials usage with online-only programs and linen-less banquet tables, and we ask attendees to bring their own tote bags rather than manufacturing new ones.
