Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) for ASM are key values and a vital part of its mission. ASM Journals is proud to feature articles addressing topics related to inclusive diversity with equity, access, and accountability. This regularly updated collection covers challenges faced by microbiologists from underrepresented groups, fostering DEI in STEM education, inclusive accommodations for both scientists and students, neglected diseases affecting underrepresented populations, and more.

The journal Clinical Microbiology Reviews has welcomed its first Global Advisory Board. Consisting of 8 members from diverse regions, this board consults with the Board of Editors and prospective authors to provide strategic direction for the journal in covering topics of both worldwide and regional interest, particularly considering underrepresented populations and neglected diseases and conditions.

Penguin’s book-vending machine at Scotland’s Linlithgow Academy is designed to give students access to more than 70 titles from Penguin’s “Lit in Colour” reading lists. The initiative was taken after research conducted by Runnymede Trust found less than 1% of students in Secondary Education (GCSE) programs had studied a book by a writer of color. The vending machine goals is to make the work of writers of colour more visible in schools.

Tori is a reading organization in Amsterdam that is committed to making a more inclusive children’s book landscape. Books and picture books are used as windows (understanding about others) and mirrors (recognition) for children.

Queerboeken.nl is a website with reading tips about LGBTIQ+ books. The reading list is supplemented four times a year with new titles and consists of the categories: translated, reading for the list, young adult, fiction, non-fiction, boy-boy, girl-girl and gender. Every book is available in (online) bookstores and (school) libraries.

The Black Archives is a historical archive and cultural center for black heritage in Amsterdam. The archive consists of artifacts and more than 10,000 books, mainly black writers and scientists. The books cover topics including racism, slavery and (de)colonization, gender and feminism, social sciences, Suriname, the former Netherlands Antilles, South America and Africa.

Healthier Lives is one of four Emerald goal areas designed to support and promote research aligned with SDG3. The Healthier Lives agenda principally takes the form of quarterly mission campaigns. The CACTUS Mental Health Survey is the largest and most diverse global survey on mental health among researchers. 13000+ researchers across 169 countries participated in this survey, talking about joy and stress triggers in academia and the need for a more positive, nurturing research culture. Insights from this survey have contributed to sustaining an important conversation on researcher mental health and prompts research institutions to take tangible steps towards helping researchers thrive.
