At an event held during the International Association of Scientific, Technical & Medical Publishers (STM) Reception in October, Research4Life gathered key publishing leaders to recommit to its mission of building an inclusive, diverse, and equitable scholarly environment. The event highlighted the critical role of publishers in closing global knowledge gaps and advancing the SDGs, serving as a renewed call for publishers to join the mission and support its sustainability.

The Journal of Bacteriology (JB) is piloting a double-anonymized peer review option. Double-anonymized peer review is when the author(s) and the reviewers do not know each other’s identities. By including this option the journal aims to provide a more equitable and representative scholarly publication process by reducing bias with respect to gender, race, country of origin, or affiliation.

This new toolkit aims to support all those seeking to build a more inclusive editorial and reviewer community. The toolkit recommends practical and relevant actions for editors and publishers to take to create broad representation on editorial boards and to ensure fairness and minimization of bias in the peer review process. Translations of this toolkit in Spanish and Portuguese will be coming soon.

This online webinar recognises that scholarly publishing faces significant challenges related to DEIA, and gender is one critical dimension that demands attention. While women are in many roles within publishing, there are too few leading publishing houses. Improvement is needed, and this session focuses on the role of women in leadership. In an area where we know gender disparities persist, it is heartening to recognize that women are at the forefront, leading the way in various roles.

The Green Communication and Publishing Manifesto, launched by Green Transformation and Sustainability Network, urges publishers, other sectors and individuals to align their publishing and communication activities with the SDGs, particularly in climate action, biodiversity, and clean energy. It seeks to inspire the Vietnamese and global publishing sector to drive meaningful environmental action, promote truth, and collaborate for a sustainable future. Our Annual Meeting format plan—alternating annually between virtual and in-person meetings—represents positive climate action and equitable learning opportunities for member press staff. Our virtual meetings lessen the impact of global travel and lower cost barriers to participation. At in-person conferences, we decrease materials usage with online-only programs and linen-less banquet tables, and we ask attendees to bring their own tote bags rather than manufacturing new ones.

In 2021, Globethics, in collaboration with IRAFPA (Institut de Recherche et d’Action sur la Fraude et le Plagiat Académiques), started collaborating to develop a book Series focused on SDG 4, Quality Education. The focus of the initiative was to develop cutting-edge research and publications on the matter of Academic Fraud and Plagiarism, something undermining the ethics and quality of education at a large scale nowadays. As of 2024 we have published 3 volumes, with a fourth already planned.

Through the intentional efforts of EIC Jack Gilbert to balance gender representation, the ASM journal mSystems is proud to announce that it has made significant progress toward gender parity on its Board of Editors for the term starting in July 2024. 49.2% of mSystems Editors identify as women, up from 39.8% in the previous term year. Representation matters. We hope this leads to more woman submitting to and publishing in mSystems.
