Women Leaders in Scholarly Publishing: Empowering Self and Inspiring Others

This online webinar recognises that scholarly publishing faces significant challenges related to DEIA, and gender is one critical dimension that demands attention. While women are in many roles within publishing, there are too few leading publishing houses. Improvement is needed, and this session focuses on the role of women in leadership. In an area where we know gender disparities persist, it is heartening to recognize that women are at the forefront, leading the way in various roles.

Gender Equality in Publishing – Empowering Women to drive business innovation for a better world

PublisHer in collaboration with the NYU School of Professional Studies Centre for Publishing and Applied Liberal Arts and United Nations Publications hosted the inaugural North American PublisHer event. The event convened industry experts to discuss how the publishing sector is uniquely positioned to support and advance women in publishing, with a focus on Sustainable Development Goals 5, gender equality. The event was followed by a networking reception.

Board of Editors Gender Parity

Through the intentional efforts of EIC Jack Gilbert to balance gender representation, the ASM journal mSystems is proud to announce that it has made significant progress toward gender parity on its Board of Editors for the term starting in July 2024. 49.2% of mSystems Editors identify as women, up from 39.8% in the previous term year. Representation matters. We hope this leads to more woman submitting to and publishing in mSystems.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) for ASM are key values and a vital part of its mission. ASM Journals is proud to feature articles addressing topics related to inclusive diversity with equity, access, and accountability. This regularly updated collection covers challenges faced by microbiologists from underrepresented groups, fostering DEI in STEM education, inclusive accommodations for both scientists and students, neglected diseases affecting underrepresented populations, and more.

Progress Toward Gender Equality in Research and Innovation: 2024 Review

The report examines inclusion and diversity in Academia career cohorts across intersecting disciplines and geographies, tracking multiple indicators over 20 years. It reveals progress, with women now representing 41% of researchers globally, but also that serious challenges persist in gender equality in research and innovation. The Report​​ provides a substantial evidence base for academic leaders, funders, and policymakers to take data-led action.

Queerbooks

Queerboeken.nl is a website with reading tips about LGBTIQ+ books. The reading list is supplemented four times a year with new titles and consists of the categories: translated, reading for the list, young adult, fiction, non-fiction, boy-boy, girl-girl and gender. Every book is available in (online) bookstores and (school) libraries.

The Black Archives

The Black Archives is a historical archive and cultural center for black heritage in Amsterdam. The archive consists of artifacts and more than 10,000 books, mainly black writers and scientists. The books cover topics including racism, slavery and (de)colonization, gender and feminism, social sciences, Suriname, the former Netherlands Antilles, South America and Africa.

#VoyaSer. Creating opportunities through education

#VoyaSer is a project boosted by Santillana and Fundación Entreculturas – Fe y Alegría. It supports girls at risk of exclusión, with the purpose of helping them complete secondary education and, therefore, giving them better future opportunities. To accomplish that, #VoyaSer offers comprehensive care, which includes training in digital skills and emotional intelligence and pedagogical support and mentoring, provided by the company’s employees. It is being
developed in Guatemala and Perú.

Quentin Bryce Award

In 2020, UQP launched the UQP Quentin Bryce Award, which is conferred on a new title that celebrates women’s lives and/or promotes gender equality. The inaugural winner was Mununjali writer Ellen van Neerven for their poetry collection Throat, followed by Sarah Walker’s timely and brave essay collection, The First Time I Thought I Was Dying, in 2021, and Mirandi Riwoe’s short story collection about marginalised women, The Burnished Sun, in 2022.

Series of Children’s Books about Sweden’s Top Female Football Players

The Swedish publisher Olika, run by Marie Tomičić, has developed a series of books about Sweden’s top female footballer players. The goal of the publication of the series is to contribute to increased equality and representation in literature. Beyond this, Olika is a publishing house focusing on diversity for young readers, and through publishing content such as this series, Olika is clearly committed to highlighting the sustainable development goals.

PublisHer

PublisHer started as an informal group in 2018, when industry leaders Bodour Al Qasimi of the IPA and Maria Pallante of the Association of American Publishers launched a network to promote women’s role in shaping leadership in the publishing business. The group seeks to focus on how exclusion and gender bias affect women in their careers and impacts on content and diversity in books, and how diversity and inclusivity can be prioritized in the publishing industry.
