The second conference took place in September 2024 and focused on gender and health equity. IPA SDG – Goal No 5 – Gender Equality

Although gender is one of the most important social and analytical categories used in public health research, there remains a gap in integrating gender related concepts in human health, animal health, the health of the environment and in the interdisciplinary One Health debate. One Health should be driven by inclusiveness and equity on all levels of society. In consequence, the One Health methodological definition should include feminist theories and gender concepts.

In the agriculture sector, gender affects women and men’s roles, access to and ownership of resources and ability to make decisions. Integrating a gender perspective in agriculture is important to realize gender equality and women’s empowerment, enabling women to participate and benefit from development. It is also important to improve effectiveness of agriculture programs and policies, to improve food security, reduce poverty and increase resilience to climate and other risks.

Women experience unique health issues such as pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause, which are understudied due to historical bias. From the prenatal period through childhood, the intestinal microbiota sees major compositional changes, and many diseases have been linked to dysbiosis. IAI invites manuscripts on the vaginal microbiome, pathogen-host interaction in the female reproductive tract, or the infant microbiome for its Women’s Health and the Development of Microbiota in Childhood series.

We invested in a rainwater harvesting system, which allows us to use rainwater in our common areas through collection, filtering, storage and distribution. In addition to the electric pump, we installed a bicycle pump to distribute water by pedaling, in order to do recreational activities with the staff.
With this, we learned about the cost of bringing water to homes, we reduced the use of water provided by Mexico City and we contributed to the well-being of the staff.
