Women experience unique health issues such as pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause, which are understudied due to historical bias. From the prenatal period through childhood, the intestinal microbiota sees major compositional changes, and many diseases have been linked to dysbiosis. IAI invites manuscripts on the vaginal microbiome, pathogen-host interaction in the female reproductive tract, or the infant microbiome for its Women’s Health and the Development of Microbiota in Childhood series.

As part of the Princeton University Press’ commitment to environmental sustainability, the Press launched its first issue of the PULP sustainability newsletter, aimed at educating and informing its staff of environmental issues within the publishing industry, as well as the sustainability initiatives being undertaken by PUP, under the guidance of its Sustainability Working Group. The newsletter is an educational tool to bring more awareness to sustainability to the Press’ employees.

In 2020, Princeton University Press (PUP) launched the Global Equity Grants initiative. The grants support self-identified underrepresented authors during the publication process. Nearly 100 grants have been offered since the launch of the program, subsidizing the costs of childcare, permissions and illustration preparation, media coaching, additional marketing, and research and engagement related travel.

Beginning in 2022, Princeton University Press (PUP) has committed to using only book papers rated three stars or higher by the Book Chain Project, as determined by a tool called Forest Risk Assessment, which assigns a grade to each paper brand and type. PUP has also increased its use of paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and continues to prioritize the use of FSC-certified paper whenever possible.

In 2020, Princeton University Press announced the PUP Publishing Fellowship, an initiative aimed at addressing a lack of diverse representation across the publishing industry. The Fellowship is also part of the Press-wide “Equity, Inclusion & Belonging” strategic initiative launched in 2018. It is designed for individuals with no prior publishing experience, who are from communities historically underrepresented within US publishing.

Princeton University Press (PUP) gives annually to organizations whose missions and values align with its own. Some of the organizations PUP has donated to financially this calendar year are BookTrust UK, Universal Reading Foundation, Princeton Public Library, HomeFront NJ, Trenton Area Soup Kitchen and the CCNY Publishing Certificate Program. PUP has also donated books to Northwest Prison Education Program, Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County and the TREC College in Prison Program.

The global book trade needs to be able to identify books that are about or advance all or specific SDG Goals and it is important that these can be discovered by potential readers.. EDItEUR has now added specific qualifier codes for each of the SDG Goals to the global book subject classification Thema and these can be used by publishers to increase the visibility of titles around the globe, in any language and for any audience.

In November 2024, multiple prominent scholarly publishers joined together in a call to action for the global community and governments to take immediate, decisive steps toward avoiding climate catastrophe. This joint editorial, published across multiple leading journals, identifies microbe-based solutions to pursue and globally coordinated strategies for implementing them at scale, emphasizing that science must be at the forefront of the global response to the climate crisis.

The Journal of Bacteriology (JB) is piloting a double-anonymized peer review option. Double-anonymized peer review is when the author(s) and the reviewers do not know each other’s identities. By including this option the journal aims to provide a more equitable and representative scholarly publication process by reducing bias with respect to gender, race, country of origin, or affiliation.

WIPO hosted “Right to Read” Conference on the topic of the Marrakesh Treaty and the Accessible Books Consortium in Sydney, Australia for representatives of government and blindness associations from the Pacific Islands. Ms. Maryanne Diamond, a key negotiator on behalf of the World Blind Union in Morocco, where the Marrakesh Treaty was adopted in 2013 gave the keynote address on the first day.

HarperCollins UK plants a tree for every new starter, working with Trees for Life, a rewilding charity based in Scotland, committed to creating large-scale environmental change in the Scottish Highlands. They plant a tree alongside other native trees that will in time transform open Scottish hillsides into healthy young woodland helping to restore the Caledonian forest.

The new HarperCollins facility in Robroyston, Glasgow, including distribution center and offices, is due to open in 2025 and is being built with sustainability in mind. The site is being built to BREEAM ‘very good’ standard – this means it will be operating to a high standard on areas including energy and water usage, pollution, waste and ecology. Features will include solar panels, rain water recycled for bathrooms, and landscaping that will promote the local ecosystem.

Saving nearly 200 metric tons of carbon emissions in fiscal 2023 through HarperCollins UK’s transporting of books from Europe to the U.K. by rail instead of trucks.

25 volunteers from HarperCollins UK joined forces with charity CleanupUK to go on a litter pick at Southwark Park near our offices in the News Building. The team collected 28 bags of refuse, making the park a safer and cleaner space for the local community and wildlife.

HarperCollins employees proudly support the Arbor Day Foundation and its mission to plant more trees, voting to fund the restoration of Boise National Forest after the Pioneer Wildfire burned 190K acres in 2016. The donation will plant new ponderosa pine and Douglas fir seedlings for reforestation, benefiting wildlife and future generations. We also supported sustainable forestry in the Amazon Rainforest and Trees for School Forests in Michigan. In total, our donation will plant over 24K trees.

HarperCollins proudly supports Pajama Program, a nonprofit that ensures children have access to healthy sleep by providing new pajamas, storybooks and sleep health education. The program helps children facing challenges like low income, housing insecurity, and family instability develop better bedtime habits, which improves school performance, health, and emotional well-being. HarperCollins employees volunteered to teach children in the Bronx about healthy bedtime routines and donated books.
