HarperCollins supports Housing Works, a New York-based nonprofit dedicated to fighting AIDS and homelessness for the past 10 years. During this period, the company has donated more than 230,000 books to the Housing Works Bookstore Cafe, with donations of nearly 30,000 books this fiscal year. One hundred percent of the store’s profits go toward funding the organization’s lifesaving services.

HarperCollins UK became a member of On Pack Recycling Labels (OPRL), a program to promote consumer awareness of what materials can be recycled and where they can recycle them. OPRL labels are widely recognized in the U.K. and give clear information to consumers on items with shrink-wrap or cardboard packaging used to protect products.

HarperCollins UK announced the launch of Book Squad, a new collaboration between Collins, HarperCollins Children’s Books, Farshore, and Barrington Stoke. Aiming to support reading for pleasure in primary schools, it will provide free unique content about children’s literature, in-depth research, reading recommendations, and free resources

To celebrate its 200th anniversary, HarperCollins donated $200K to literacy charities, including NCAC, Rood to Read, United Through Reading, and We Need Diverse Books. They also invited book lovers to share #WhyIRead on social media to emphasize the importance of reading. Six winners using the hashtag won ebook prizes and chose a First Book-eligible school or program to receive a donation of 1K books. First Book impacts 6.5M children annually in low-income communities across North America.

Facilitating access for those with print disabilities is key to HarperCollins’s commitment to promoting literacy. We are part of the Accessible Books Consortium’s Charter for Accessible Publishing, supporting the production of accessible format books, and work with TIGAR to exchange accessible books globally. HarperCollins also partners with Bookshare, an online library for people with print disabilities, to provide free content, and works with the UK’s Royal National Institute of Blind People.

HarperCollins teamed up with ElevenLabs to leverage text-to-speech technology to produce audiobooks in our foreign language division. This collaboration will bring audio versions of deep backlist series to life, broadening the accessibility and reach of titles that would not otherwise have been created.

Our eco-friendly font journey began in 2017 with Zondervan’s NIV Comfort Print typeface, which has saved over 100M pages, followed by the HC Arc font for non-English titles. The proprietary fonts are easy to implement and versatile, enhancing reader experience while benefiting the environment. The adult trade team has since curated a collection of thinner fonts that improve opacity and use less ink; paired with thoughtful layouts to maximize space and reduce page count has saved over 183M pages.

In Sydney, HarperCollins Australia adopted sustainable design principles in their office relocation, using high-recycled-content materials from local suppliers, installing sensor lighting, and donating two tons of surplus office supplies.

In the UK, HarperCollins Children’s Books collaborated with the International Rescue Committee to bring a Christmas surprise to children at St. Mary’s Ukrainian School. Bestselling children’s books were translated into Ukrainian and gifted to families rebuilding their lives in the UK.

RAISE AWARENESS OF ECOLOGICAL TRANSITION CHALLENGES AMOUNG BOOK SECTOR PROFESSIONNALS

Modelled on the Climate Fresk – an educational card game with over a million followers – the Book Fresk is designed to raise awareness of sustainable development issues among book professionals.

Created in 2023 by Fontaine O Livres and CSR Specialist Charles Hédouin, the Book Fresk is played in a 3-hours game, including brainstorming, discussion and outlook.
