Through the intentional efforts of EIC Jack Gilbert to balance gender representation, the ASM journal mSystems is proud to announce that it has made significant progress toward gender parity on its Board of Editors for the term starting in July 2024. 49.2% of mSystems Editors identify as women, up from 39.8% in the previous term year. Representation matters. We hope this leads to more woman submitting to and publishing in mSystems.

Our microbiome can be impacted by the details of our lifestyle, including diet, hygiene, health status, and more, but many are driven by social, economic, medical, or political constraints that restrict available choices that may impact our health. This collection of mSystems articles highlights recent investigations into beneficial and detrimental instances of microbial exposure, in the context of how social policy may mediate or deepen disparities between and within populations.

Microbiology Spectrum welcomes studies on improving lab equity globally. Laboratory equity includes providing accessible and affordable diagnostics to inform clinical decisions and improve patient outcomes across patient populations. These might not be widely available due to geographic barriers, high costs, bias, stigma, discrimination in healthcare, or challenges like lack of permanent housing or incarceration. Sharing such studies is essential to boost global initiatives for equitable access.
