Our eco-friendly font journey began in 2017 with Zondervan’s NIV Comfort Print typeface, which has saved over 100M pages, followed by the HC Arc font for non-English titles. The proprietary fonts are easy to implement and versatile, enhancing reader experience while benefiting the environment. The adult trade team has since curated a collection of thinner fonts that improve opacity and use less ink; paired with thoughtful layouts to maximize space and reduce page count has saved over 183M pages.

The idea was simple. For books to be truly sustainable the full supply chain needs to be working together to rapidly decarbonize. But it is difficult to see how actions being taken across the supply chain were making tangible carbon reductions. To do this, we used a carbon footprint approach to give an initial estimate of the overall carbon impact of the Portuguese general publishing sector. The data would be supplemented by qualitative interviews to help identify areas where action can happen.
